چکیده

Methods A total of 46 patients without comorbidity and more than 2-year survival after an ADRS episode were identified between 2000 and 2006. 27 patients finally participated in this study (13 ADRSp and 14 ADRSexp). Demographic data, smoke status, ventilator data, length of ICU and hospital stays and measures of severity of illness such as the Acute Physiology, Age, and Chronic Health Evaluation; Acute Lung Injury Score and Sepsis-Related Organ Failure Assessment were evaluated. Pulmonary function tests were performed using standard procedures. Spirometry, static volumes by pletismography and diffusing capacity form carbon monoxide by single-breath were measured. Normal values were calculated following the European Coal and Steel Union guidelines. Functional capacity was measure with a standardized six-minute walk test (6MWT) using standard protocol. Normal values for 6MWT were according with the Enright y Sherill reference equations.

Pulmonary and extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome: are they different?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Acute respiratory distress syndrome has been considered a morphologic and functional expression of lung injury caused by a variety of insults. Two distinct forms of acute respiratory distress syndrome/acute lung injury are described, because there are differences between pulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome (direct effects on lung cells) and extrapulmonary acute respi...

Association between inhaled nitric oxide treatment and long-term pulmonary function in survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome

INTRODUCTION Assessment of treatments for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has focused on short-term outcomes (for example, mortality); little information exists regarding long-term effects of ARDS treatment. Survivors of ARDS episodes may have long-term obstructive/restrictive pulmonary abnormalities and pulmonary gas exchange impairment. A 2004 prospective randomized placebo-control...

Distinct and replicable genetic risk factors for acute respiratory distress syndrome of pulmonary or extrapulmonary origin.

BACKGROUND The role of genetics in the development of acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from direct or indirect lung injury has not been specifically investigated. The aim of this study was to identify genetic variants contributing to ALI/ARDS from pulmonary or extrapulmonary causes. METHODS We conducted a multistage genetic association study. We first perform...

Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Chance for a Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach

Background and Objectives: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterized by progressively worsening lung function, ventilation capacity, dyspnea, and finally reduced exercise intolerance. All of these have a significant negative impact on functional capacity and quality of life. In this study, we aim to evaluate the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in IPF and assess the predictor...

Pulmonary and extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome: myth or reality?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW The pathogenesis of acute respiratory distress syndrome has been explained by the presence of a direct (pulmonary) or indirect (extrapulmonary) insult to the lung parenchyma. Evidence indicates that the pathophysiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome may differ according to the type of the insult. This article presents a brief overview of the differences between pulmona...
